Bus Driver Arrested for Allegedly Crashing Into Truck to Kill Passenger After Onboard Dispute

A commercial bus driver has been arrested for allegedly causing a fatal crash in an attempt to kill a passenger following a heated argument during a long-distance trip from Onitsha, Anambra State, to Lagos.

The driver, identified as Ifeanyi Ukwaja, who operates with Agbasi City Mass Transit, was accused of deliberately swerving into a stationary truck after a confrontation with a passenger seated in the front of the vehicle.

According to reports, the incident occurred near Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, earlier this month, after Ukwaja allegedly exchanged angry words with the front-right passenger and threatened to “deal with” him.

Witnesses said the driver allegedly drove the bus into the path of a parked truck, causing the passenger’s side of the vehicle to collide with the stationary vehicle.

The impact reportedly killed the front-seat passenger instantly, while several other passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries.

Following the crash, Ukwaja allegedly abandoned the damaged bus and fled to his hometown in Imo State, where he was later traced.

The transport company reportedly launched efforts to locate the driver, which led to his arrest on July 18 at Ahiazu Mbaise Police Station. He was subsequently handed over to authorities in Ogun State for further investigation and prosecution.

The incident has generated widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians expressing shock over the alleged actions of the driver and calling for stricter safety measures on intercity transport routes.

Transport operators and road safety advocates have also urged passengers and drivers to avoid confrontations during journeys and to seek peaceful ways of resolving disputes.

Authorities are expected to continue investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash, while the suspect faces possible legal action over the passenger’s death.

The case has renewed concerns about passenger safety, driver conduct, and the need for stronger monitoring of commercial transport operators across Nigeria.
