A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following a shocking knife attack in north Belfast that was captured on video and widely shared on social media, prompting widespread public concern and a major police investigation.

The incident occurred on Kinnaird Avenue, off the Antrim Road area of Belfast, shortly after 10:30 p.m. on Monday. Graphic footage circulating online appears to show a man repeatedly attacking another man who was lying on the ground, while distressed witnesses shouted for the violence to stop.

The victim, a man in his 40s, sustained life-threatening injuries and was rushed to hospital, where he remains in a serious condition.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) confirmed that officers responded to reports of a serious assault and arrested a suspect at the scene. The man remains in custody on suspicion of attempted murder.

Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson described the incident as “deeply concerning” and confirmed that a critical incident had been declared as detectives work to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack.

According to witness accounts, members of the public intervened during the assault in an effort to stop the attacker before police arrived. Emergency services subsequently secured the area and launched a forensic examination.

The disturbing footage has attracted significant attention online, sparking debate about public safety, violent crime, and policing. However, authorities have urged the public to avoid speculation while investigations remain ongoing.

Police have not released further details regarding the suspect’s identity, background, or possible motive, citing the active nature of the investigation.

Political leaders across Northern Ireland have condemned the violence and expressed support for the victim and his family. Calls have also been made for anyone with information, dashcam footage, CCTV recordings, or other evidence to come forward.

The PSNI has asked witnesses to contact officers via 101, quoting reference number 1654 of 08/06/26.
