Ugo Ugochukwu Makes History as First American to Win FIA Formula 3 Championship

Nigerian-American racing prodigy Ugo Ugochukwu has become the first driver from the United States to win the FIA Formula 3 Drivers’ Championship after a composed second-place finish in the season finale in Madrid.

Ugo Ugochukwu has completed a remarkable turnaround in his young racing career, clinching the 2026 FIA Formula 3 Drivers’ Championship in dramatic fashion at Madrid’s new Madring circuit on Sunday.

The 19-year-old Campos Racing driver secured the title with a controlled second-place finish in Feature Race 2, crossing the line behind MP Motorsport’s Tuukka Taponen, who claimed his maiden Formula 3 victory.

Ugochukwu finished the championship with 159 points, 14 points ahead of British rival Freddie Slater of Trident.

The American-born driver arrived in Madrid facing a significant challenge after starting the final weekend 15 points behind Slater.

However, the championship battle changed dramatically during the weekend.

Ugochukwu’s strong Saturday performance, combined with Slater’s crash and failure to score in Feature Race 1, brought the two title contenders level on 141 points heading into the decisive final race.

With the championship on the line, Ugochukwu started second on the grid, while Slater began from eighth.

Rather than taking unnecessary risks, Ugochukwu delivered the disciplined performance his championship campaign had been built on. He remained clear of trouble throughout the race, including during a late Safety Car period, to secure the points needed for the title.

Taponen controlled the race from pole position to take his first F3 victory, while Brazilian Pedro Clerot completed the podium.

“We knew we just had to keep it clean to clinch the title, and that’s what we did,” Ugochukwu said after the race. “No mistakes, brought it home and super pleased.”

“To win the championship is a testament to the consistency and the job we have done throughout the year,” he added.

The championship triumph also completed a memorable weekend for Campos Racing, which secured the FIA Formula 3 Teams’ Championship for the second consecutive year.

Born in New York City on April 23, 2007, Ugochukwu has Nigerian roots through his mother, former Nigerian supermodel Oluchi Onweagba, and Italian roots through his father, fashion designer Luca Orlandi.

Although he competes under the American flag, his background has made his rise through international motorsport a story of particular interest to both American and Nigerian audiences.

Ugochukwu began attracting attention in karting before winning the 2020 FIA Karting European Championship in the OK-Junior category.

His performances earned him a place in the McLaren Driver Development Programme at just 13, putting him on the path towards the international single-seater ladder.

His career subsequently suffered a setback in 2025 when he endured a difficult Formula 3 campaign with Prema. He finished 16th in the standings without a victory and subsequently parted ways with McLaren’s junior programme.

The move to Campos Racing, however, sparked a major revival.

Ugochukwu responded in 2026 with two Formula 3 victories and multiple podium finishes, combining outright speed with the consistency that ultimately proved decisive in the championship battle.

His latest achievement adds to an increasingly impressive list of honours.

He won the 2023 Euro 4 Championship, claimed the 2024 Macau Grand Prix, becoming the first American winner of the prestigious event in 43 years, and captured the 2026 Formula Regional Oceania Championship.

His Formula Regional Oceania title also saw him finish ahead of Slater, providing another chapter in the rivalry between the two young drivers.

The 2026 FIA Formula 3 title now places Ugochukwu among a select group of recent champions who have gone on to reach Formula 1, including Oscar Piastri and Gabriel Bortoleto.

More importantly, the championship represents a significant comeback for a driver whose career appeared to have stalled after his disappointing 2025 campaign.

Instead of allowing that setback to define his trajectory, Ugochukwu rebuilt his confidence and consistency with Campos Racing—and finished the season as champion.

His success in Madrid therefore marks more than just another trophy.

It is a breakthrough moment for Ugochukwu, a landmark achievement for American representation in Formula 3 and a significant milestone for a driver whose Nigerian heritage has followed him throughout his rise in global motorsport.

After a season defined by consistency, resilience and a dramatic championship fight, Ugochukwu now stands at another important crossroads in his career, with the possibility of taking the next step towards Formula 2 and, ultimately, Formula 1.
