A disturbing video circulating online has triggered widespread outrage across Nigeria, after an elderly man was allegedly caught attempting to lure a 13-year-old girl into his room under the pretense of buying cocoyam.

The incident, which reportedly occurred in a residential area, was captured by a vigilant resident who became suspicious of the interaction. Filming discreetly through a window, the individual recorded the elderly man engaging the minor in conversation and allegedly trying to persuade her to enter his residence.

According to the footage now trending on social media, the man appeared to be negotiating a purchase while repeatedly encouraging the young hawker to come inside—raising concerns about her safety.

Sensing potential danger, the resident who recorded the video intervened and confronted the elderly man, effectively stopping the situation from escalating. The act has drawn widespread praise online, with many Nigerians commending his alertness and willingness to step in.

The video has since ignited intense reactions, with citizens expressing alarm over the risks faced by underage street hawkers, particularly young girls who often navigate public spaces without supervision.

Child protection advocates say the incident highlights the ongoing dangers associated with child hawking, a common practice in many communities. They warn that minors engaged in street trading are frequently exposed to exploitation, harassment, and other forms of abuse.

Calls are now growing for stricter enforcement of child protection laws and increased public awareness to safeguard vulnerable children. Many social media users are also urging authorities to investigate the incident and ensure accountability.

As of the time of this report, it remains unclear whether the suspect has been reported to law enforcement agencies or if any formal action has been taken.

Parents and guardians are being advised to exercise greater caution, while community members are encouraged to remain vigilant and report suspicious behavior involving minors.

The viral footage serves as a stark reminder of the importance of collective responsibility in protecting children and preventing potential harm before it occurs.
