A violent confrontation outside Filmhouse Cinemas IMAX in Lekki, Lagos, on Friday night left two people dead after a man allegedly armed with a machete and knife attacked security personnel and was later beaten by a mob.

According to eyewitness accounts, the man approached the cinema and attempted to gain entry but was stopped by security guards.

The situation reportedly escalated after he was denied access. The man allegedly brought out a machete and knife and attacked the security personnel, killing one guard and injuring another.

The injured guard was reportedly left at the scene as the confrontation drew the attention of people nearby.

A crowd subsequently intervened and attacked the suspect. He sustained severe injuries during the confrontation and later died.

The Lagos State Police Command confirmed on Saturday that two people had died in the incident.

Police spokesperson, SP Adebisi Abimbola, said the identities of the deceased and other details surrounding the incident were still being established as investigations continued.

As part of the probe, police have reportedly taken the cinema’s Chief Security Officer into custody.

Investigators are also examining CCTV recordings from the premises in an effort to establish the precise sequence of events, identify those involved and determine whether there were other circumstances surrounding the deaths.

The police have not publicly released the identity of the alleged attacker.

Details about the condition of the second security guard who was reportedly injured during the attack have also not been disclosed.

The incident has raised fresh concerns about security at major entertainment venues in Lagos, particularly facilities that attract large crowds during weekends and public holidays.

Authorities are expected to provide further information as the investigation progresses.
