The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has intercepted approximately 22.2 kilograms of unprocessed gold valued at over ₦4.4 billion at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano, in what officials describe as a major anti-smuggling operation.

The anti-graft agency confirmed the arrest of three suspects in connection with the attempted movement of the gold. Those arrested include an Aviation Security (AVSEC) officer and two other individuals identified as Ali Baffa, Aushabu Nasidi, and Mukhtar Muhammad Dan Zaria.

According to the EFCC, preliminary investigations suggest that the suspects were involved in an attempt to illegally transport the precious mineral, prompting immediate intervention by security operatives at the airport.

The seizure has generated widespread public interest and intense speculation on social media following reports linking the intercepted gold to a prominent Nigerian political figure.

Several online publications and social media accounts have claimed that the gold may belong to former Zamfara State Governor and current Senator Abdulaziz Yari. However, as of the time of filing this report, the EFCC has not officially identified the owner of the gold or publicly linked Senator Yari to the seizure.

Sources cited by some media platforms alleged that the suspects made certain claims during interrogation, but no official documentation or statement from the EFCC has been released to support those reports.

The EFCC stated that investigations are continuing and that all persons connected to the case will be thoroughly examined.

The development has once again drawn attention to Nigeria’s illegal mining sector and the growing concerns over the smuggling of solid minerals through airports and border routes.

Security experts say the successful interception demonstrates increasing vigilance by law enforcement agencies in tackling illicit trade in the country’s mineral resources.

As Nigerians await further details from investigators, attention remains focused on whether the EFCC’s ongoing probe will uncover the true ownership of the seized gold and determine whether additional arrests or prosecutions will follow.

The agency is expected to provide updates as investigations progress.
