The Nigerian film and theatre industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran Nollywood actor, dramatist, and academic, Kola Oyewo, popularly known as Pa Kola Oyewo, who passed away at the age of 80.

His death occurred on Friday, June 12, 2026, and was first announced by fellow actor Kunle Afod via Instagram. The news was later confirmed by members of his family, including his son, Adetoyese Oyewo. Reports indicate that the veteran thespian had been battling a brief illness prior to his passing.

Born on March 27, 1946, in Oba-Ile, Osun State, Pa Kola Oyewo built a remarkable career spanning over six decades, becoming one of the most respected figures in Yoruba theatre and Nigerian performing arts.

He began his acting journey in 1964 with the legendary Oyin Adejobi Theatre Group, where he honed his craft and rose to prominence. Over the years, he became widely recognised for his commanding stage presence and iconic screen roles, including his memorable portrayal of Oba Lapite in the classic film Saworoide, as well as his performance in The Gods Are Not to Blame.

Beyond acting, Oyewo was also a respected academic. He earned a PhD in Drama and lectured at institutions including Obafemi Awolowo University and Ekiti State University, where he served as Head of the Department of Theatre and Media Arts. His dual impact on both stage and classroom cemented his reputation as a mentor and cultural custodian.

In recognition of his contributions to Yoruba culture and tradition, he was also honoured with the chieftaincy title of Balogun of Oba-Ile.

Following news of his passing, tributes have continued to pour in from across Nollywood, academia, and the broader creative industry. Colleagues and fans have described him as a “true legend,” a guiding light in theatre, and a towering figure whose influence shaped generations of actors and storytellers.

Funeral arrangements and further tributes are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days as the industry continues to reflect on his enduring legacy.

May his soul rest in peace.
