Doctors Warn Against Viral ‘Fire Therapy’ Video Claiming to Cure Stroke

A viral video showing a traditional practitioner applying intense heat to a man described as a stroke patient has triggered widespread concern online, with medical professionals warning that the practice is dangerous and should not be promoted as a cure for stroke.

The video, reportedly filmed at Ezekwueche Clinic Center in a rural Nigerian setting, shows a shirtless man lying down while a practitioner applies what appears to be a heated cloth or fire-related instrument to his oiled back, neck, spine and limbs. The man can be seen reacting visibly to the treatment.

The footage was shared on X with a caption claiming that Africans use fire to “permanently cure stroke,” and reportedly attracted more than 1.4 million views within hours, generating heated debate between supporters of traditional practices and medical professionals.

Popular Nigerian doctor and health educator Aproko Doctor strongly criticised the treatment, describing it as “plain wickedness” and warning that applying intense heat to a stroke patient could cause additional injuries.

He explained that a stroke occurs when blood flow to part of the brain is blocked or when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures, making it a medical emergency requiring urgent assessment and treatment.

Other doctors and health professionals also joined the discussion, warning that procedures involving intense heat can cause burns and other complications while potentially delaying patients from receiving appropriate emergency care.

The criticism comes amid growing concern over misleading health claims circulating on social media, particularly claims that traditional or alternative procedures can permanently reverse serious medical conditions without hospital treatment.

Medical evidence does not establish external fire application as a treatment capable of reversing the underlying brain injury caused by a stroke. According to the American Stroke Association, stroke occurs when blood flow to part of the brain is blocked by a clot or when a blood vessel ruptures. Brain cells can begin dying within minutes when deprived of oxygen and nutrients.

Doctors therefore stress that time is critical when a person develops stroke symptoms.

For suspected ischemic stroke, patients may be eligible for clot-dissolving medication such as alteplase or tenecteplase when diagnosed and treated within the appropriate time window. Some eligible patients may also benefit from mechanical thrombectomy, a procedure used to remove a large clot from a blocked blood vessel.

Before treatment can be selected, doctors need to determine what type of stroke has occurred. Brain imaging, including CT or MRI scans, can help clinicians make that assessment and guide emergency treatment.

The American Stroke Association’s current guidance emphasises that rapid assessment and treatment can reduce brain injury and improve outcomes. For selected patients, clot-busting treatment may be given within 4.5 hours of symptom onset, while eligible patients may receive mechanical thrombectomy within a longer window based on their condition and imaging results.

The controversy has nevertheless highlighted the complex role traditional healers continue to play in communities where access to hospitals, specialist doctors and diagnostic equipment may be limited.

Supporters of the treatment have defended it by pointing to ancestral practices and personal accounts of people who they believe improved following similar procedures. The practitioner featured in the discussion has also reportedly viewed stroke as having both medical and spiritual dimensions.

However, doctors caution that personal experiences and individual testimonials are not enough to establish that a treatment is medically effective, particularly for a condition where delays can have serious consequences.

Health professionals are urging members of the public to recognise common warning signs of stroke, including sudden facial drooping, weakness or numbness in an arm and difficulty speaking. Other possible signs include sudden balance problems or changes in vision.

Anyone who develops sudden symptoms suggestive of stroke should seek emergency medical care immediately rather than relying on a treatment that has not been scientifically established as a cure.

The viral debate has once again underscored the importance of separating cultural beliefs and personal testimonials from evidence-based medical treatment—especially when dealing with a time-sensitive condition such as stroke.
